Staying Healthy This Cold Season

As the weather cools and we head into cold and flu season, it’s a great time to revisit simple, practical steps to keep you and your family healthy. While we can’t always avoid catching a bug, we can lower our risk and support our bodies to recover faster.

Tips to Stay Healthy This Season

Prioritize Sleep: Rest is your body’s best defense. Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night to strengthen your immune system.

Stay Hydrated: Even in cooler weather, your body needs fluids to function well. Water, herbal teas, and broths all count.

Support Your Immune System with Nutrition: Fill half your plate with colorful vegetables, add lean proteins, and include healthy carbohydrates like fruits, beans, or whole grains. Vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc-rich foods are especially helpful.

Wash Your Hands Often: Regular handwashing is still one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of viruses.

Get Outside and Stay Active: Fresh air and movement do wonders for your mood, metabolism, and immunity. A brisk walk, even on chilly days, helps keep your body strong.

Don’t Skip Preventive Care: If you’re due for your annual check-in, flu shot, or other vaccines, schedule them before peak cold and flu season hits.

COVID Updates

Check Your Home Tests: Many people still have COVID tests from earlier in the pandemic. Take a moment to check the expiration dates on your kits. If they’re expired, it’s time to replace them so you’re prepared if symptoms arise.

Current Symptom Trends: We’re continuing to see COVID circulate in the community. Anecdotally, upper respiratory symptoms (like congestion, cough, sore throat, fatigue) are lasting about two weeks on average, which can feel longer than a typical cold.

When to Call Us: If you’re unsure whether symptoms are more than “just a cold,” Elevated DPC members can reach out by phone, message, or schedule a same- or next-day visit. We’ll help you decide whether you need testing, supportive care, or further evaluation.

What to Do If You Get Sick

If you develop a cough, sore throat, fever, or body aches, stay home and rest. Hydrate, manage your fever if needed, and don’t hesitate to reach out if symptoms worsen or you’re not bouncing back as expected.
